don't worry about it at all: it's really very straightforward and not scary at all. My OH declared himself bankrupt last week and i went along with him. It was really straightforward and everyone was really nice. I say 'everyone' but we actually only saw two people: the chap on the door of the court and the woman who went through his form.

Basically we sat in a little interview room with a girl who came out in trousers and a jumper (don't know why i think that's important, it just surprised me how laid back she was). She went through the form with him and made sure he'd filled it all in correctly, got him to sign it and read aloud an affirmation that it was all true etc. She took the fee, but was really nice about it and was saying how it's horrible to have to ask people for money, and then she said he'd wait a bit and then see the district judge. She did say to him that the judge would just be a bloke in a suit, nothing scary.

As it happened, we sat in a waiting room waiting for the appt to see the judge, and after about 45 mins the same girl came back in and said we didn't need to see him, he'd signed it off and declared the bankruptcy. She gave us a piece of paper to confirm that and told us to expect a call from the OR later that day to set up an appointment, and told us we could go. That was it. I know it's probably unusual not to see the judge in person, but the whole tone of it was completely non-judgemental and matter of fact that we were totally at ease about seeing the judge anyway. It was all done and dusted in 90 minutes and the tone of the whole thing was very non-threatening, and i imagine if you've filled in the form, the hardest part of the process is out of the way.

Please don't worry yourself about it. It's over in the time it takes to watch a footy match, and then you can start getting everything in order again. It's an opportunity to wipe the slate and put yourself straight, and as such, tomorrow is a GOOD day.

    Chin up.

I sometimes find it good in these situations to think of what is the worst that can happen? Will you get hurt, will it kill you, will everyone point at you and laugh??? No, no and no. The worst that will happen is that you might encounter someone who is a bit moody. Right, will you survive that encounter? Yes. So, stop worrying. I have read numerous peoples accounts on here of meeting the OR and ALL of them, without exception have been positive and have said how nice everyone is. Chin up, tomorrow is the first day of the rest of your life! ;)

we haven't seen the OR yet, the appointment is next week. But my OH had the phone call from them on the day he declared, and they had a chat about any assets that could be taken, and they said they wouldn't be taking anything (largely because he doesn't have anything, apart from a few hundred quids worth of golf clubs, which they said he could keep).

I think it's quite long-winded and laborious, depending on how complicated your situation is, but again, probably the most stressful and important part is having all the paperwork properly filled in before you go. One or two people who've posted on here have had slightly grumpy ORs, but that seems to be the exception rather than the rule as most people say they're perfectly nice.

Whatever they're like, it's only going to take a couple of hours so will be over before you know it. And it's got to be less stressful than dealing with scary calls and letters from creditors, which you're now going to be able to deflect!
