Certified copies

Hi all,

My solicitor has asked for certified copies of proof of address and photo id so thay can confirm my identity before acting on my behalf.
Is it still possible to get a Police Officer to sign these?

    Your selected question

    Q:
    Who can certify my documents?

    A:
Copies of documentation can be certified by a regulated professional person covered by the money laundering regulations or a government body, such as a UK Lawyer, Banker and Authorised Financial Intermediary. However the overriding requirement is that the person undertaking the certification must be capable of being contacted if necessary and therefore contact details should be obtained.
Further examples include persons in a position of responsibility who know the prospective customer, can confirm that they are who they say they are, and can confirm their permanent address. Persons in a position of responsibility are: Doctor, Dentist, Solicitor, Ministers of Religion, Teachers, Hostel Managers, Social Workers, Care Home Managers, Prison Governors, Probation Officers, Police Officers, Civil Servants, Members of Parliament, Members of the Scottish Parliament or Northern Ireland Assembly, Justice of the Peace, Local or County Councillor, or staff in the registry of a higher or further education institution. In addition a district nurse or midwife who has visited the client in their home.

By a police officer do you mean one that know you as a friend or just a random PC on the street? The former is fine the latter not!
  • Thanks for that info.
Do you know exactly what they need to write on the copy?

  • Our stamp says "I hereby certify this to be a true and accurate copy of the original document" and I've never had any complaints.

You also need the name, signature, position and address of the person certifying it.

Why not just give / show him the originals?

I am using a solicitor who is some distance away from me.
As I dont have a chain tie in with I am not in too much of a hurry, therefore I can go with one of the cheaper conveyancing quotes without worrying about the speed of the process.

We had ours done at the Post Office. £5 per document. I kept the certified copy of my passport and have since used it for an ISA!
