Registry cleaners

Just reading in one of the " Dummies " series of books that registry cleaners are at best useless and at worst could screw up the system. Any thoughts please?

I think you shouldn't believe everything you read in books.

Ccleaner and eusing will be fine

I've used RegClean on many occasions. Never had a problem.

I wouldn't place much confidence in any registry cleaner because unless you understand the registry, you shouldn't be allowing anything to make changes in it unless you understand exactly what it has done and the implications and know 100% how to undo any changes.

That said, CCleaner is a good central tool to keep handy to clear up your temporary files etc.

Millions use registry cleaners and they have their place in my toolbox. However, I would suggest if you do not know how it works, what you want it to do and why = don't use this or indeed any other PC tool / utility.

Just last week someone used COMODOS 100% no problem 'reg cleaner' and it froze their computer

Luckily a LAST CONFIGURATION setting put it back to normal. But it just goes to show that theyre not to be played about with and unless theres THOUSANDS of errors, is VERY unlikely to make the slightest bit of difference anyways

Ive personally used loads and had problems with most of them (tuneup utilities etc)

ANY registry cleaner used without knowing the full implications of what you are actually doing can screw up your system, but they are far from useless and PC's require regular maintenance to operate smoothly - including cleaning the registry.

ALWAYS make a backup of the Registry before making any changes.......

I have used regseeker for many years on many systems with no problems..always creates a back up to.

Ive read some recent articles that have hinted the reg cleaning is not really neccessary unless you are installing and uninstalling heavily but i always find it nice to see those unused entrys being deleted :-) its like having a spring clean on your hardrive.
