tomato sauce

  • If anyone fancies trying a really top quality one, I bought a Tiptree / Wilkin & Sons jar from Morrisons last week and we've almost finished it already. Super tomatoey and thick. Cost £1.75 but was like a little blob of luxury on our chips (and everything else as we got addicted to it quite quickly)

Marks & Spencers Tomato Sauce is delicious, best I've ever tasted. I only bought it as it was on offer at £1, don't know if it's gone back to full price or what the original price is.

but isn't tomatos auce good because it has Lycopene in it?

Healthier than mayo or creamy salad dressings I'd have thought.

My DD eats any tomato sauce out of a squeezy bottle, I don't know why they don't sell pouch refills like they do hand soap now. Would be cheaper to manufacture?

  • If you must have Heinz, which I can understand, then you might be interested to know the following; the reduced sugar & salt variety actually contains more tomatoes!

The figures in bold are the important ones, I only noticed as the reduced suagr & salt version was on offer in Tesco and I'm generally skeptical about things with reduced sugar/salt/etc, as it's generally replaced with things I consider to be worse, so I looked at the label.

The ingredients are the same, just more tomato! It tastes completely the same.

    Heinz
Squeezy Reduced Sugar & Salt Tomato Ketchup 550g £1.93 (£0.35/100g)

Tomatoes (144g per 100g Ketchup), Spirit Vinegar, Sugar, Salt, Spice & Herb Extracts (contains Celery), Spice

Heinz Squeezy Tomato Ketchup Sauce £1.64 (£0.36/100g)

Tomatoes (132g per 100g Ketchup), Spirit Vinegar, Sugar, Salt, Spice & Herb Extracts (contains Celery), Spice

    Wins: Fillipo Berio Spray Oil
  • On offer in my branch last night. Lovely sauce, tastes like Chirstmas - full of wintery spices.
  • Sainsburys Basics Tomato Sauce is the tomato-ist :p cheaper brand we have ever tasted. 43p for 560g but NOT in a squeezy bottle. Ours has been poured into the (empty) Heinz squeezy bottle and not one complaint from our ketchup-guzzlers.

I'd get the cheapest and wouldnt even change the bottle, if he didnt like it then he wouldnt be eating it with every meal.....hmmm, maybe thats why I'm divorced!! lol

Love the idea of mixing in it tho. Maybe try downshifting to just one price drop lower for a start then the next if thats ok with him.

    Good luck :)

Get him to watch Freaky Eaters on BBC3. That had a guy on there addicted to brown sauce. The showed the amount of salt he consumes each year compared to the 'average' person. It was shocking!
Do not allow the risk of failure to stop you trying!
