My mother did this a year or so ago. She just got one of the will writing kits from WH Smiths and wrote it out herself. She had two friends from work sign as witnesses and has given me a copy and keeps the original in a lock box at home. The form its self is all fairly simple and I have done my own on a copy.

I remember seeing a panorama or similar consumer documentory a couple of months ago about wills. Certainly important to get it done! The programme seemed to critisise these DIY will kits but the problems seemed to be down to it replacing an old will and not being witnessed. I might be wrong though!

I just had a run in with a will writer (not a solicitor) as the information they were giving out was wrong. You get what you pay for a lot of the time.

I'v e seen some good wills and some bad wills

Wills can assist in ensuring the right people get the money , guardianship, legacies and inheritance tax , but they don't have to be limited to those who can afford to pay for them - its a matter of whether you feel its worth paying the extra for one worth advice ( 2 basic mirror wills would cost about £50 online or £100-£140 if someone visited) or if you feel your wishes can be expressed in a simple document these can be sourced from stationery shops or online
    ( I might even have a copy available !)

HOWEVER a good will writer / solicitor may provide advice on tax matters, guardianship, storage etc and be particularly useful if your sitaution is more complex (involving cases with larger sums, ex spouses, children from previous relationships etc)

so is a write your own good enough or not?

would it be valid if witnessed?

guessing that is better than no will at all?

    thanks

Whilst tehre have been cases that unwitnessed ( even unsigned letters) have been allowed, wills should be witnessed
