Quote for plastering ... Haggle??

Hi
I got a few quotes for plastering my kitchen including a ceiling.
Just wondering is is standard to haggle for discount or is that a bit cheeky. I have done so in the past for other things e.g carpets, appliances but not for this.
Reason is, I had a few quotes and some were cheaper than others but the one i had the best feeling about was slightly more expensive (and turned up on time for the quote)
any ideas??
Cheers

i like to haggle when i buy things and i like to think i am not bad at haggling.
but i would not haggle if i was given a price for doing a job for me
i would think of it this way if you ask for a cheaper price you may get a cheaper job done.....is that what you want???
i don't think so.
better if you could get someone you can trust.

I just asked dh (who is a plasterer) what his reaction would be if someone asked him to lower his quote due to getting a lower quote from someone else, and he said he would tell the person to go with the person with the lower quote if that was the price they wanted to pay (or words to that effect).
He says that any quotes he does are for the price he would work for, and not any lower.
Having said that, he mainly works in new builds, where there is an agreed meterage/day rate for the whole building site. He only does work like people's kitchens if the pay is good.Quidco cashback paid out so far £745.89 :j0 -

hi i have done alot of building works in my properties and always get several quotes it is quite normal as quotes very so much from one person to another. as a guide all trades man charge between £100 - £140 per day but always do better for cash. best way get all your quotes together and ask the person you liked best to do your job for the lowest price minus 10% if possible. and also do it over the phone this tends to work best as i have found. good luck0

thanks to all ... i didn't necessarily mean i was gonna confront the guy and say you're more expensive than the rest, more that some trades expect you to ask for a discount so didn't want to say yes and miss the opportunity but also don't wanna insult the guy.
would most discount for hard cash??0 -

Don't tradespeople deserve to make a decent living then ?
If the quote is reasonable and the guy is a good plasterer pay him, and if anyone asked me for a discount then sorry I would say NO, but not quite so politlely0 -
Tradespeople all get reasonably well paid nowadays and there is nothing wrong with telling one guy that you have been quoted lower than him but would rather have him to do the job if he can match the price or offer some other incentive. If he doesn't show any flexibility he doesn't get the job.
I know quite a few tradesmen who quote according to their current work situation. If they are stacked out with work they quote high prices to choke off demand.
People in the UK are far too submissive when it comes to dealing with builders, garages, etc - you are the one paying the money, you are the one who should be in control.PLEASE DO NOT STEAL

I am also a self employed Plasterer.
Personaly I don't lower my quotes.
I work out my prices on the time it takes to do the job.
I offer a quality service.
Turn up.
(In a desent van)
Lay dust sheets.
Do the job.
Clean up and remove debris
Pay my Tax "n" NI
On soap box a bit sorry for that.
This all costs.
I would go with the guy who turned up "sounds like you were going to anyway"0 -

'in a decent van' that is funny. Is it a cargo van? lolThe message you have entered is too short. Please lengthen your message to at least 10 characters.
