Not particularly money saving, but here goes anyway.
My sis is volunteering to have our son for the weekend of 4th 5th April, as we have had a hard couple of months work-wise, & hubby just lost his father, and we deserve a break.
So can anyone point us to a nice quiet country hotel, with really good food & decent service.
Ideally within about an hour's drive of Ross-on-Wye, as that's where we'll be dropping our son off.
Thanks in anticipation.

I fancy this one http://www.lowerslaughter.co.uk/default.asp, but it's a bit pricey, esp as they add £50 a night to their 2 night break price for weekends.
How does one do negotiations on price?I try not to get too stressed out on the forum. I won't argue, i'll just leave a thread if you don't like what I say.

I used to work at Stapleford Park (http://www.stapleford.co.uk/), but I can't promise that it would be child-free. Fantastic place though!I am the General Manager of an hotel in Telford and am happy to offer advice. I can't promise to be perfect, but I'm happy to try to help.

Give them a ring. You will almost always get the best deal by calling and chatting with a human being. The web is too impersonal for this sort of booking. Explain the situation, ask for their best price. Ask for a complimentary upgrade and see where you get to. The worst they can do is offer the original price anyway, so you'll lose nothing by asking (as they said in Monty Python's Life of Brian, "You've gotta haggle!").
As the GM of an hotel in Telford, I know that some hotels have also been duped by people claiming that they are considering bringing a massive amount of business and would like a complimentary stay as a "road test". We used to do this but have got wise... Now we charge for the "road test" and deduct that cost from the final bill after the big event. Not worth trying this, as the industry is getting wise to it and it can land you in trouble.
Hope this help and enjoy your (well-deserved) break!I am the General Manager of an hotel in Telford and am happy to offer advice. I can't promise to be perfect, but I'm happy to try to help.

Looks lovely APV1, but is too far from Herefordshire. We're driving from Nottingham to Ross-on-Wye to drop off our Son, and will need to collect him again on the Sunday, so need somewhere not too far from there, or we'll spend all weekend just driving.
We have decided to do 2 nights tho' Friday & Saturday.I try not to get too stressed out on the forum. I won't argue, i'll just leave a thread if you don't like what I say.

Checkout Alastair Sawdays Special Places website - you can search by county. I use this site a lot and then double check the hotel on Trip Advisor too!!!!
