Incorrect registration on PCN

I received a PCN from the council but they have printed my registration incorrectly, it is out by one digit. Is the ticket still enforceable?

Thanks in advance!

Its only enforceable if they can find you, if the VRM is wrong then its unlikely that the DVLA can give them your correct address.

It's not enforceable at all. It's invalid and they can't change it. That is so long as it IS a PCN and not issued under RTRA 1984.

Thanks! So what do I do? Ignore it and wait for them to get to me? I'm sure theyll figure it out eventually. Or do I contact them and say the ticket is not for my car?

You need to first confirm it is a PCN as I said.
What legislation is quoted at the top?

If a PCN yes ignore is probably best. If Council have pics and 'try it on' by serving a Notice to Owner then come back here. You would then just appeal on the basis of the PCN being invalid.

The alternative is to just to write a very simple challenge and say ' I found this on my car but the registration does not relate to my vehicle. Kindly confirm your error'.
Simple and nothing more than that, no detail or details of the difference, etc.

The problem with the latter is that numpties working at Councils may not know they can't change it and will try to tell you to pay.

    probably best to ignore.

If this is an FPN or ECN issued under RTRA 1984 - none of the above applies.

Ha Ha!.......very true.....if the VRM is incorrect even by one digit then no way will a council let this get as a far as adjudication ( so long as you make them aware of their error).

If you do not contact the council they will submit the incorrect VRM to DVLA for verification but as it's incorrect the DVLA will provide either incorrect details or advise that the vehicle is untraceable.

Thanks for the replies. I have checked and yes it definitely is a PCN.

Are you saying that I should tell them they made an error with the VRM, rather than ignoring it?

I think he is trying to say that even if you told them of the error they could not continue with it, but there is no need to tell them.

  • Hello, can you help?
I've received a PCN through the post for a tiny tiny box junction infringement. Obviously they have found my address via the DVLA.
However, going online to pay, I notice they have me down as ****O** rather than ****0** (a letter 'oh' rather than number zero).
Clearly the DVLA have spotted the mistake and paid it no heed.
But can I dodge the PCN because they have the wrong registration?
The two accompanying photos have my plate very clearly however.
  • As you have posted on your own then it will confuse matters to have both running.
