Building a New House

Hi, I realise this may well be a silly question, but here goes: Does anyone know of a website that will provide a very basic, beginner's/starter's guide to building houses please? OH and I are hoping to build our own house (using a builder, not literally building it ourselves) in the near future, and I really want to get a grip on what to expect, what to look out for, what sort of timescale things happen in and in what order etc. I'm feeling very out of my depth!
Thanks
Thanks

Get yourself a subscription to Homebuilding and Renovating magazine. It's invaluable - covers basics in every issue and as you build up your collection you get more and more in depth articles on the different ways of approaching certain aspects of the build. Also tons of inspiration for your own house in the form of other case studies. I'm addicted to it
They have a website too which has a beginners guide to self-build:
http://www.homebuilding.co.uk/self-build
And don't forget to visit the Homebuilding and Renovating show in a couple of weeks at the NEC. Free tickets available if you look around.Everything that is supposed to be in heaven is already here on earth.

Thanks Doozergirl, I'll definitely take a look at the magazine (must confess I went straight to the Tesco clubcard site to see if I could get a subscription using vouchers lol
)
Thanks also sloth, I'll study both sites suggested in the morning when my brain is more absorbent. There just seems so much to think about!0 -

if you do make it to the show they always have a cheap subscription offer of some sort - I think it was 3 for 3 pounds? (I've had my subscription for donkeys but took out a sub on another of their mags last year) and they sell cheap back issues there also.Everything that is supposed to be in heaven is already here on earth.

Thanks again, but doubt we'll be able to get there. It's a long way from where we are and probably not the sort of place to go with a toddler + a baby in tow! But I'll definitely get the magazine and have a look, it sounds good - smallish bits of info to read when I can grab a few minutes, pictures to inspire etc!0

The book 'The Housebuilder's Bible by Mark Brinkley' is known as an *extremely* good resource. A new addition is due out in the next few weeks to pre-order it.0

I do wish that all this information had been available when we built our houses. One in 1965 and one in 1977. When we did the first one, we only found one book on the subject. When we did the second one there was a little bit more information available, but not much. Most of it came from books that we bought at the Building Centre in London. No internet of course.I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.0
