NatWest charge £38 for bouncing a cheque, are you sure it was 1 cheque?

  • Yes - it was one cheque but when I went in and queried it, they said they'd presented it twice. Should it have been 76 pounds then?

That makes sense now(I was trying to work out the £78 but I suspected it might have been one cheque bounced twice.

Yes, the person/company who you paid the cheque to can present it as many times as they like, until it clears.

Same cheque bounced twice, two bank charges.

    Who writes cheques nowadays anyway?
    British Ex-pat in British Columbia!
  • Ah, I see - the payee paid it in twice. Not the bank's fault then.

I rarely use cheques - some people ask for them though - landlords usually.

With a cheque, if it is presented for payment, the bank will charge if it is returned unpaid. First time, the response maybe "Refer to Payee Please Represent" what that means is that it is sent back to the landlords' bank and the cheque is represented again.
If this is the first time you have been charged, approach your bank and see if they would be willing to refund at least one charge as a gesture of goodwill.

If they have gone under then you are a creditor. If they haven't gone under, have you contacted them so that a duplicate cheque can be sent to you?
