last i first out

hello, its a question regarding lifo ( last in first out).

i currently work at a retail distribution centre.there are ten workers working in my area on the night shift.i was one of the last two workers in that job.however, i am the youngest at the age of 26. all the other workers are older then me the next oldest is 38. majority of them have been working there around two years more than me.however i have one of the best records out the lot.i have no disciplinary records, no sickness in the past year and a half. i have a good working attitude etc.

now to my question................
im just paranoid because work has gone a bit dead and were in a recession.so wanted to know where do you think i stand regarding redundancies?

It would be usually considered age discrimination for them to take into account length of service, it is also potentially indirect sex discrimination (more women than men have trouble building up long service records). Your record and reliability will make them want to keep you, but if you have under two years service you will not receive a redundancy payment, so they might 'find' a way you fit the criteria as you will be cheaper. They should tell you the criteria they are applying

There is quite an interesting article about this today on the business section of the BBC News site written by an employment lawyer.

  • It is pretty much a given now that using LIFO as a reason for selection for redundancy is unfair and discriminatory for the reasons explained above, they should use more competency based criteria and should let you know what these are too, thats not to say they will tho....
