How far do bank records go back?

I've just moved house and while I'm emptying the boxes, I've decided to file all my bank statements and have found I've got quite a few missing. I've asked my bank if they can supply duplicates. They say they can but only for the past six years.
Do records exist (for them) beyond six years or is that their standard line for those claiming back charges?
Thanks
Bill

Normally six years I think (statute of limitation etc) but I think I read banks are obliged to hold the information for longer at the moment due to the unfinished court case and charges claims on hold. No doubt BarclaysManager will know when he gets home!0

Why on earth do you want copies of bank statements that are more than six years old? Have you nothing better to do with your time? I can find you plenty of jobs to do around my house if you are at a loose end.0
