Payments made on Cancelled Debit Card

I checked my Smile bank statement earlier this week to find that a payment had been made despite the fact that no DD or Standing orders are set up from this secondary account. On questioning I found that a payment had been taken from a debit card which was lost in August of last year and I cancelled immediately the same day! Having contacted Smile repeatedly I have been told that because the company in question had the card details prior to it being lost, payments can be taken despite the card no longer being in existence. Is it me or this utterly ridiculous? Can anyone from a banking background clarify for me?

It's documented on this site.
What you most likely have is a "Continuous Payment Authority". These are a nightmare to cancel.
