EON trying to shaft me?

I have recently changed electricity supliers from EON to EDF energy. I received a phone call yesterday from EON saying I owed them £183.00.
The reason I feel I'm being shafted is I pay for my electricity using a pre payment key metre. So if I don't pay, I don't have electric. Around 2 years ago EON changed my metre, (I used to have a token metre), they are now saying that the calibration of my new metre was incorrect.
When I queried this I was told that unless I called them about my electric they could not look at my account and change my tariff. I think I am being taken for a ride as my gas was also with EON (direct debit) and when my balance dropped into debit my payment was automatically put up.
Has anybody else been in this situation? And where do I stand with the money I allegedly owe EON?
Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Geoff.

Welcome to MSE, Geoffjb1972 :hello:
Please take some time to read though some existing threads. Numerous people have created threads on the same false assumption.
Unfortunately, it's not possible for all meters to be updated on the day a price revision takes place, and that can result in a difference between what you have paid and the cost of energy you have consumed.
Unless you have any grounds to dispute the billed amount, you owe that amount to e.on"Now to trolling as a concept. .... Thanks for the reply.
The point I am trying to make is that key meters can be adjusted without anyone actually coming out, the re calibration can take place when you insert the key. (Though I'm aware it can take a few goes).
Part of the service I am paying for is for them to ensure my payments are up to date and correct is it not?0 -
Hi
This does sound like recalibration debt, this was a big issue with the old Token prepayment meters.
It’s basically the old style meters needed manually altering whereas the newer types are altered by electronic messages and that type of thing.
If there was a price increase during the time you were supplied by E.ON and the meter not updated to reflect this, a shortfall would occur. In its finest form the electricity you used was worth more than the amount you paid for it.
E.ON can check if the debt is from the token meter, if it is the money should be wiped off. If the debt is from the key meter that was later installed we would need to check this as well, but if the error is with the meter not being set up correctly you do have grounds to dispute it.
Hope this helps.
