  • You can either;

    a) Buy an external usb drive

    or

    b) share a drive that's in another computer over the network.

To do the latter and assuming you're using Windows, you need to right click on the drive and select 'Sharing and Security' and select the option to share it. Then you can browse it through the network, or if you want to go the extra you can map it as a network drive so it shows up on the other computer.
  • I've got a desktop dell .. but not on a "network".

Whats the cheapest external i can get ? .
Didn't realise i was going to hit this issue ... defeats my plan of saving money buying a "mini" !!
  • If you've got a LAN port on the dell desktop, then you could buy a cheap Crossover Network Cable for a couple of quid and connect them like that to facilitate the drive sharing.

You don't need to use the supplied disk to set up your broadband connection, you can just do it manually. The CD's just give you a load of trial software that you didn't want in the first place. All the info should be on the ISP's website.
However if you're using AOL's bespoke software (if you must) then yes you do need to run the CD to install it.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
  • anewhope ... thanks .. think this is sounding hopeful !.

I'm very non techie ... but sure my Dell desktop has Lan port ..... i've looked on fleabay and there seems loads of Network Cables easy & cheap...

what next ? .. presume plug in from Dell desktop to new Mini .. how /what do you do to make it happen ?

As i said ..this is just a one off job .. with a couple of programmes being on cd that i need to load onto new Mini.

    cheers

in most cases you could copy over the contents of the cd to a usb drive using your pc and use the usb on the mini
  • have now bought my crossover cable .. and have the mini laptop now .. and got the aol and microsoft office discs ready ....

    Instructions on here:

Once you've created the network you can move files across from your desktop PC just as you would normally move files.
