Encouraging parents/families to volunteer their help!

Options
Does anyone have any ideas tried and tested that work on parents and families to volunteer their help at a school fete. Our annual fair is always very successful, but as a new PTA Committe was voted in at the start of this school year (Sept 09), we want to try a different approach to encourage parents to help. We are thinking that a group of people, maybe one family that are going to attend the fete, take charge of one stall with a team leader, then they all take their turns between them and can still enjoy going round the fete.

This way we haven't go to worry about drawing up a rota system where people volunteer for 1/2 an hour, then don't turn up! It was very frustrating last year and we are aiming for it all to be more organised than last!

Any suggestions would be very welcome!! Thanks!!!!

  • We have a parent rep for each class, and each class takes over the running of one stall at the fete - from planning, buying any items that need to be bought or asking for donations, to setting up, running it on the day and counting the takings afterwards. The rep organises 'volunteers' (who are approached directly for help, usually just manning the stall for half an hour or so) so the PTA committee are free on the actual day to sort out any problems, help with general setting up, giving out floats etc. Worked well for our school last year, so we'll be doing it again this year!
