Why do banks charge you a " non sufficient funds" fee on money they already know you don't have?

    Ridiculous profits on what they hope will be a repeat target.

    "Oh look, they don't have enough funds ..."
    "Hmm, best charge them a fee for that."
    "But what if they can't recoup the money for the following month, sir?!"
    "More silver lacing our palms, eh boy?"
