Working in Corsica

Hi there, I am moving to Corsica in April to work as a waiter for a UK holiday company. I was wondering if anybody on here had any tips regarding working abroad, I was thinking about tax issues, best phone company to use and things like that?

As it is quite a broad subject matter I thought the Travel forum was the best, please feel free to move the topic if it's in the wrong place??

tis a bit ski season orientated but I'm sure there is a section about summer seasons
    .....hic.......
  • Thanks kenspoker, that's a great website but doesn't have a great deal of info in regards working abroad, tax issues and the like ..... tends to concentrate on how best to pull, interesting certainly :D , but not what I was looking for!!
  • Corsica is a French Department, so any info regarding living and working in France would definately apply ........

Well if the "pulling" web site works, you won't give a fork (waiter joke...) about the tax!!

Depends how long you're likely to be out of the UK as to whether you'll be regarded as resident for tax purposes - needs to be more than 6 months out of the country, is that likely to apply?
  • Thanks ManAtHome, I have a 6 month contract with this company, but they have told me that they are likely to take me on in another resort subject to me succesfully completing the summer season, so I would say I am looking at being out of the uk for 48 weeks out of 52, does that apply?

If it does what should I do now?

ps. The OH is coming with, so not likely to get the chance to try out any "pulling" techniques!!

    a couple of tips:

take some home comforts with you - you won't believe some of the things u take for granted that u'll miss :) photos, your favourite shampoo, etc...

take some favourite long-life foods with you - items you may not necessarily be able to get out there. when i worked abroad i had cravings for simple things like pot noodles and monster munch!! just get them out of the cupboard every now and again :)

if u take any medication ensure u can take a long supply with u to last the duration.

    have a gr8 time!
  • Thanks Slinky, the OH previously mentioned is going as a chef ... should be a fair supply of food there!!!

Take the home touches point, will pack plenty of photo's and ready noodles! :D
  • Does anybody on the boards have any experience of working or living in France?
