I've worked on a term time contract for British Gas no less for the last 2 years working mondays, thursdays and fridays 8-6 and saturdays 8-1, and find it really works for me, in fact its probably the best benefit of being employed by them!!!. I get a weeks paid leave as well. I have 3 children aged 11,9 and 3 and although I moan and groan a lot at having to work through the winter when we're exceptionally busy and the weather is bad once it gets to this time of year its well worth it. Because of how school holidays are timetabled I get 10 weeks off between now and September!!! Its nicer for the kids as well because we can go out on trips and spend time together etc and I still get to see them during the week as well because I work such long shifts at other times.

What do you do about childcare for those hours as you would struggle where I am. Very few nurseries open before 8am and I don't know of any nurseries or after school clubs that finish later than 6. As for saturdays, no chance. Not many childminders working outside these hours either. The only way you could do it was if you had relatives or a partner available to look after the children whilst you worked.
  • From a kid's perspective - I loved my Mum working term-time only, it meant we got her for all the holidays! So at Christmas she had all the extra time to make cakes and stuff with us.

She also used to have 'projects' every summer holidays, like getting a room decorated or something that needs the time devoted to it.
  • Just to say had the interview and didn't get the position, so all that worry for no reason.
