Its a simple fix, ive updated mine and its quite happy running in my Sky HD box 24/70
-
can you just clarify, are you using an external HD to boost your recording capacity on a sky + box?
Anychance of an idiots guide on how to do that?
I'm constantly running out of space as I have an old low capacity box0 -
Ive took the hard drive out of the case and put it inside the box, its very easy to do but you need to copy contents from the old hard drive to the new one other wise it wont work, lower capacity hard drives (under 750gb) work without copying software.
If yours in a Sky+ box then you can easily add a 500gb drive which will cost around £40 and will be a straight swap
Have a look here....

Yes it needs to be plugged into the mains, you want a external portable drive powered by USB , the biggest you can get is currently 500gb for aound £80

If this has a WD drive inside then awesome0 -
Yo! :money:
Many thanks MSE Lawrence & Traveller1981: nice one!
Ordered mine last night - and they're disappearing fast.
Will decide what to do with it once it arrives, after opening it up to examine it! Will report what's actually inside it.
As is, it's ideal for plugging into the USB2 port of an Airport Extreme (Gigabit versions) to create a wireless network storage and Time Machine backup device.
Alternatively, it's ideal for plugging into the USB2 port of a Humax FreeSat-HDR box as additional storage space for recordings.
I'm very grateful to you.
Some helpful Customer Reviews of it are here.
One little word of advice: be careful when doing the Checkout at eBuyer - you need to alter the shipping method, manually, from "Next Day" to "Within 5 Days" in order to obtain the free delivery. You will otherwise be charged up to an additional £10 for it. (Which, on £70, is some 14%.)
Thanks, also, Martin Robson: those will be great for some internal upgrades I want to do. :money:
Amazing to remember that a decade ago, 200 MB drives cost hundreds of pounds - and that was before Gordon Brown set about demolishing the value of the pound. Now, I've got a tiny 16 GB memory card in my 'phone and it cost me just £35 - even in new mini-Brownds.
Roll on the day of the 1 TB SSD drive for a fiver!
thamesmatt,
I ran a standard 250 GB Seagate 7,200 rpm IDE/PATA hard drive in my Sky+ box (Pace) for several years. No problems at all. All I needed to do was open the box (undo half a dozen screws) and swap it for the original 40 GB drive that was inside it (unplug two connectors, plug them into the new drive). I did need to buy a special "security" screwdriver, though, to use on the screws: these cost about £2 online.
After we cancelled Sky, I put the original 40 GB Maxtor drive back into it and am now using the 250 GB Seagate for another purpose (as an additional computer drive inside a G4 Power Mac).
We found that 250 GB was plenty big enough for a Sky+ box: it transformed its usefulness. We could go abroad for a month or two and it would have enough space for everything we wanted to record while we were away.
Go for it!
Don't laugh at banana republics. :rotfl:
As a result of how you voted in the last three General Elections,
you'd now be better off living in one.

Newbie entering thread - go easy!
Two points:
1. I was about to but a 750GB or 1TB Maxtor One touch Plus hard drive, I'm very lazy about backing up and the one touch bit appealed to me. I think Maxtor are linked to Seagate but I admit to knowing nothing about hard drives. Is this correct? Would I be better to stter clear and go with the Toshiba?
2. I have a Tiscali + box. The hard drive is too small and so noisy it almost drives me mad. Any recommendations for a suitably sized, quiet, reasonably priced drive?
Many thanks for any suggestions.0 -
1. Maxtor are owned by Seagate I think - tbh the seagate issue affects their 1TB and 1.5TB drives only I think (It was quite a bad issue though) - personally I prefer WD (Which this has inside I think)
2. Samsung Spinpoint 1TB is good I have heard0
