Redundancy is looming but what about my mortgage

Has anyone had any experience of dealing with the Halifax BSoc about their mortgage or any other provider?
I am thinking of getting in touch with them about my situ and either extending my term or somehow change my deal to reduce payments to give me a bit of a safty net and make my redundancy payment last longer.
God forbid they waiver any charges to change my deal --> or would they???

In essence this is to give me more time to find something work wise.

Has anyone else done this and and dealt with their mortgage provider. If so what was the outcome - where they very helpfull or the opposite.

I am a bit wary of telling them until I have the lowdown as wouldnt want them to get funny about my situ

cheers

I haven't been in your position myself so I can't comment from experience. However, pretty much every article I have read on the subject of redundancy stresses that you should contact anyone you are in debt to (e.g mortgage company, credit card comapny etc) as soon as possible to let them know the situation - they will try to help but hate being kept in the dark.

Having said that you say redundancy is 'looming' - what does that mean ? Are you definitely being made redundant, at risk or what ? I wouldn't say anything if there's still a possibility that it might not happen....
  • My husband was made redundant in jan 09 contacted the halifax insurance they said we would have to wait 30 days as they pay in arrears,i have a loan and a mortgage with them, the mortgage has been great accepted reduced payment for feb and march till claim sortd , the loan is putting presure on me with phone calls which they charge you £10.00 for an admin fee every time they ring you in jan they gave me a 10 day hold, and on the 10th day they tel ne at 08.10am and said i had failed to ring them,i advised them i was ringing them today, and they said it was to late to get the charge removed as they had tel me at 08.10,they dont help you at all,i have managed to pay them for jan and feb , with another one due on the 12/03 but it is going to be late,i get a call today asking me for 17.50 ,asked why and was told it is a telephone call charge of £10.00 and the other 7,50 is a late admin charge for paying late they are no help at all even though my insurance should be paying them from the 3/3/09 they even said i may get another 10.00 charge for the call they made today,i have asked them for a break down of this adnin charge and they said they can't do this,i am so fed up i hope no one else has to go through this with them, you are trying your best to pay everyone and even when you are covered by insurance you dont get any help.
  • Oh the good ol Smelly fax!

My DH was made redundant in Dec 08. He called the Smellyfax immediately and told them he was going to claim on his PPI. They said that he would dhave to pay ths first month of his loan as the PPI didnt kick in for 30 days. He questioned this but to no avail.

To cut a long story very short, he received several letters saying he was late with his loan and CC payments and that he was being charged £x for each one. He rang up one of the numbers on the letter, asked why he was still getting these letters when he was claiming on his PPI and they said that the Smellyfax had never advised them of this fact!

They are a waste of time IMHO, far too big for their own boots, complete lack of communication between departments and very bolshy! Don't be fobbed off either!

    Good luck in your quest!

I would suggest contacting them at the earliest opportunity once you are sure that you will be made redundant and asking them how they can help you. They might offer you a payment break or reduced payments. You don't know until you ask!
