How Do I Make HM Yoghurt?

After making my own bread, butter, cakes, pizzas, sausages etc, I'm now looking at making my own yoghurt. I know that a lot of OS MSEs make their own yoghurt so I'm really looking for what works best.
I know there are some systems you can buy where you just add water to 'yoghurt' powder - I think they are called EasyYo but not sure.
I don't want to use this kind of system but want to make my own from proper milk.
Also, how long will it keep etc?
I would also prefer to make a thicker yoghurt (like Asdas luxury yoghurt)
Is this fairly easy??

Many thanks

There are loads of HM yoghurt threads on here - look at the index for loads of different ways.

I use the EasiYo equipment - which is basically a litre yoghurt pot and a huge thermos flask - but not the sachets cos I don't like the taste.

I put 2 tablespoons of Total Greek yoghurt (my fave) in the bottom of the pot, fill it up with Tesco's UHT milk (whole - semi-skimmed is a bit grainy for me), stir it, put the lid on. I then fill the white outer pot with boiling water from the kettle, stick the inner pot in, put the lid on and go to bed. In the morning, I have nice, thick yoghurt, ready to go into the fridge. It keeps about a week (but we always eat it before then) but the bottom inch or so tends to go a bit runny.

You can see the Easiyo thing here. Hope this helps. Do try it - you'll never look back!!
  • Thanks ChocClare - I didn't realise you could use the EasiYo equipment with milk. Will probably give this one a try

You're welcome! There are really expert yoghurt makers on here and I'm sure they'll have more advice to offer, but I can't be bothered with heating milk and then letting it cool to a perfect temperature, hence the easy option of Tesco's UHT milk. If I tell you that my 13-year-old son will eat the resulting yoghurt without either sugar or jam in it, then that should tell you how nice it is!

I have posted this before but here goes.
Buy a large tub of live yoghurt from a supermarket, (Check that it contains Live Cultures ) put it in an ice tray and freeze it to make yoghurt ice cubes.
Part fill the Easyo contaner with milk, ( Skimmed / Fresh or carton) Add one cup of skimmed milk powder and one or two of the yoghrt cubes.
Shake it all up untill mixed and the cubes disolved, top the container up to full.
Carry on, using the instructions that comes with the Easyo.
8/12 Hrs later you have good, thick and cheap yoghrt
I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.
  • Thanks ariba10.
    More novice questions:
    Can I use whole milk?
Whats the purpose of skimmed milk powder? Can I do without?
Is the yoghurt I make 'live' as it is made from live cultures?

You can use any milk, whole / skimmed /semi skimmed.
You can make it without skimmed milk powder but I find it makes a thicker yoghurt.
Experiment, it is not all that expensive even if you have to throw the odd one away now and again while you learn.
