Different female point of view here. :)

Textured paint in a kitchen maybe isn't such a good idea unless it's the really fine textured stuff? (Sorry Rob :o ).

We've used this type of thing a lot over the last few years in various rooms/houses and we've found it doesn't stay as clean as flat paint and also you can't wash or wipe over it. A kitchen with all it's associated cooking can increase dirt/dust/grime over a period of time more than any other room so you really need something practical.

Even steam rising will help dust travel and cling to the textured stuff.

However, it is very good for hiding imperfections though.

Having said all that, if you're the type of person who freshens up the paint every now and again then it probably wouldn't matter. Me......I hate decorating and once it's done, I hope it's YEARS before I have to do it again. :rotfl:

Btw, my vote would be for tiles as mentioned above.

After years of fannying around with sandpaper and rotary sanders, my road-to-damascus-moment came in the shape of a Belt Sander. Sweet Lord a-mercy! Cracks, raised areas of plaster, multiple layers of paint you name it, all fell before its screaming majesty! 'Tis a vicious beast however and if ye should tarry too long in one place it will punish you by gouging grooves in your wall. The belts are not that cheap either.

Used with care and respect it is without a doubt the ONLY way to do heavy duty sanding and get instant results and it will save you many days, nay months of sanding over your lifetime. Never again will I return to that Satan known as the sanding block! (apart from that really fine stuff that I use between coats of varnish and gloss paint to give a nice smooth finish!).

(CG's HUSBAND HERe) Just a thought I know about the cat prob we had the same. Unless you plaster the walls they will never be perfectly flat and the corners will chip even then, if knocked with a plate or hard edge (Chair, Bin, etc). As its a kitchen I dont recomend linning paper either. I do recomend Tiling in those cheap white tiles with a feature montage or strip running along. Djohn's idea about concentrating around the cupboards is very good. Either that make a feature with the rough walls try colour washing as this hides blemishes quite well, or just keep going as you are I would personally recomend sanding by hand the worse areas as the machines are prob orbital and are meant for finishing work not abrasive work ( and yes fill every gap with pollyfiller even if they are hair line)

~ silly question - how do you do colour washing?
