fraud on my Halifax debit card

Apologies if this is in the wrong place,

I have a Halifax current account with a debit card, where all our money goes in (hubby wages, benefits etc)

about 6-8 months ago, someone got my debit card number and stole £50 in Orange top ups. Thankfully I spotted it quickly and my card was cancelled and pin changed.

I checked my account online today and there were 2 x £5 vodafone payments taken out yesterday that I didnt authorise. I am with vodafone, but I pay it monthly on the 23rd and its about £18 each time.

I phoned vodafone and they said the last payment they had taken was 23rd Feb, so the money was defo taken without consent!

My teen daughter is on vodafone, as is my hubby, but I top them up myself, so I know it wasnt them (gonna check my daughters balance though when she gets in from skl)

Halifax said that more payments were pending on vodafone top up, totalling £100!!! they cancelled my card and are sending out a new one. he said theres no evidence that my pin was compromised so i dont need to change it.

Now, how the hell are they getting my card number??? if i pay by chip and pin, my card doesnt leave my sight, I DONT save my card details to any websites, and I ALWAYS check cash machines before I use them!!

The ONLY websites ive used my card on recently are Tesco, Ambrose Wilson, Alliance & Leicester Billpay and Avon.

Please tell me what I'm doing wrong and how I can avoid this in future? I burn anything with my card number or any account numbers, so theyre not being stolen from my recycle bin. Should I change banks?

  • It happens unfortunately. I don't think you need to change banks. I think it might be nice to know whether the number topped up was any phone owned by anyone connected to you. Was the £100 an error meant to be £10? Difficult one to answer, tbh

it was 4 x £5 and 2 x £40 all on sunday night. im assuming the people doing this are smart enough to be topping up unregistered payg mobiles. but lets hope not, so the !!!!!!s can be stopped!

i know it happens, but twice in less than a year??? i think im going to stop using cash machines altogether and just go into the bank for cash, or get cashback when i use my card.

I had someone use my card details fraudulently last year. I've no idea how they got hold of them. But the best thing is they ordered £200 of home grocery shopping from Asda online!!! I don't know whether they've ever been caught, but it shouldn't be too hard with a home address! Actually I phoned Asda and they said another attempt had been made which they refused because it was using a different address but with the same card details.

No offence to any person in particular on these boards, just an observation
but i am amazed how many people put their pin numbers in to machines whether its the hole in the wall or in shops etc without even thinking about what is going on around them. I have even been behind one person who read the number out loud while entering the number in.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.

You'd think wouldn't you! we rang the police once as we had a house that regularly put in orders for £100+ for champagne & brandy, every time with a different name. the orders were always stopped (it even got to the point were we'd ring Tesco or they'd ring us and ask if Mr X had tried yet that day!!!) , but the police told us nothing they could do as we couldn't actually prove they were using stolen cards and there really could be 7 /8 people living at the same addy!!!! (who live in a dodgy part of town and drink champagne...hmmmm think not!)

Believe it or not but there is software freely available online where 100's of random card numbers can be generated at the click of a button. It's as easy as that I'm afraid.
So it doesn't matter how careful you are with your number. I have been a victim of it many times.
I used to suffer from lack of motivation.... now I just can't be arsed.
