How did you choose where you live?

  • Bad news indeed! Most of the areas we are considering have one good school near a couple of, em, less desirable schools:o Maybe I'll home school... just kidding.;)

I drew a commuting shape (not a circle because it goes out further near the motorway) around work and drew it on a map. We then crossed out places we didn't want to live and places that were overall too pricey.

We then visited various places to see if we liked them and bought a local newspaper (usually with property in it).

After narrowing things down to areas we'd consider we viewed some properties and were going to offer on one but then it was flooded. We then reviewed our criteria and redid our map. We revisited places and made a short list again.

We then looked at properties and eventually decided to rent in the town where we now live to see if we liked it. We did but the rented flat was too far from the railway station to walk without arriving at the train all hot and sweaty so we then did a new map of the town and marked the streets we would be prepared to live.

After selecting our areas and roads we registered with all the estate agents and gave them our specific criteria. We went to see a few properties outside our preferred areas but not many and only to challenge ourselves. Properties were scored and also the square footage worked out so we could compare like with like. I visited the Police and asked them about areas but they said they couldn't tell me in case they were sued

I'm really anal about these things (can you tell, lol) after moving to Manchester and renting in Burnage and finding myself blocked on my route to work each morning by groups of lads wanting to know what colour my knickers were. Now we are far more careful about where we live and this time decided on a more expensive flat in a nicer area rather than a cheaper house in a worse area.

I think a lot comes down to what you are used to. This is our 12th property in 16 years and have lived in various places in the north west, the south coast, the welsh borders and now in warwickshire!
