Community Care Grant - Refused

I am slightly confused to why my friends CCG has been refused.
My friend has recently got a flat with the council this being his 1st ever property.
The flat is unfurnished and my friend has no belongings as homeless before getting the flat.
We sought help filling the form out with the local law centre and stated why each item was being claimed for Eg, Fridge - due to having to keep medication in.
My friend claims reduced rate IS which is around £30 per week and DLA LRM at £17.75.

I know we will have to appeal but surely "they" can not think he can run a dlat and furnish it on under £50 per week........

A fridge is not considered an essential item believe it or not.

I know you mention your friend will be appealing, but he/she should ask the council if they have a furniture store for people who are just starting out in local authority housing. Usually you're able to get appliances, furniture, utensils & other household items. Items are generally used but in good condition.

Another good source for all & everything for the home is Freecycle, although you may have to wait for what ever item you are looking for you come your way. It's possible though to post a want message with Freecycle so people can contact you if they have something you're after.
The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.

I should mention that there's only one of me, don't confuse me with others of the same name.

We only stated fridge due to medication having to be stored in there, we know of a second hand place for appliances for those on benefits but due to the low income is unable to buy anything just now.... thanks for the responces, we will try and get him on his feet somehow just seems so unfair!

He could try a crisis loan, they'd take a small amount from his IS each week to repay it. Freecycle is your best bet first though

    An Update!

Up too 6 weeks for the appeal.
He was "better off" homeless and on drugs and robbing to feed himself and his habit now he has sorted himself out no one wants to know!
    Sorry for the rant!

Social Fund loans have a very high refusal rate, probably because they turn over so many claims-you can now claim a care grant every 28 days! (in theory). It's always worth appealing. Have to say though that a lot of peeps use the grant system as their own personal Argos and don't seem to 'get' where the money comes from. Not saying your friend does but at the end of the day it's not the state's responsibility to sort anyone's life out or rectify their poor choices in life.

I agree with you, it just makes me mad when people get grants for clothes and so on... I'm trying to get the cash together myself to help as i feel the state should have a better system for people in crisis. Maybe helping people into work a little easier.

    Claeryocs,
Has he applied for a Social Fund Loan. I know this has to be repaid, but at least it would give him some money to help him furnish his flat.
The local council also often have furniture packs which they allow him to pay for via his rent.
    Hope he gets sorted soon.x
:j I have a persecution complex. Everytime I pass a shoe shop they persecute me till I buy them:j
  • Im in exactly the same situation.
I have started an appeal, but its taking quite a while, and ive had to go back to hostels as there are no schemes in my area and freecycle couldnt help.

Keep us informed, it'd be interesting to know what happens!

I moved into a privately rented flat once with only a blow up bed, a camping stove and a garden chair. You actually need very little furniture to survive with for a while.
