Manchester Flat for elderly couple?

I have a couple, I am trying to help, as they wish to move to Manchester to be near to family that are moving there later in the year.
The couple have a car but feel it may be their last year or two for driving so are looking to be in a spot with easy public transport and to be able to get into the local shops including a few local coffee shops as well as Park & Ride or such to get into the town.
They are bright and alert for their age which is IRO 70 but one is not capable of walking too far and getting slightly worse.
They have sold, money in bank, but wish to rent for the forseeable future but feel a one bedroomed place will be big enough. They will then, in due course, decide if they wish to buy but would rather keep renting to spend their money on enjoying themselves.
A wide brief but any help would be good.

Hi chickmug, a bit more info would be good if you've got it: do you know exactly which area/general region of Manchester their family are moving to yet? What would be the maximum monthly amount they would be likely to want to pay for the rent? Would they prefer sheltered housing/warden type stuff, or not?0

Family moving to Salford area but they, nor their family, nor I, know the area at all!!! A question of where to start on Rightmove.
Not looking for sheltered but are looking for a bit of peace. They are not skint but down to earth so not looking for a penthouse just small economical to run place. They are trying to conserve the cash they have to leave to their kids. Not sure I would do that but hey it is their choice?A retired senior partner, in own agency, with 40 years experience in property sales & new build. Maybe somewhere like Sale? About six miles from Salford.
Close to tram/bus routes and I know they've been building a lot of retirement-type properties in the last few years.
Maybe something like this?

Thanks catblue and clutton and I think I need to talk to them again tonight to establish if they want something like the link from catblue. The other idea for them but not sure (about their family) is if all the money is combined to get a house with granny flat.A retired senior partner, in own agency, with 40 years experience in property sales & new build. I really do like the idea of a granny flat/annexe myself and would definitely be up for doing this with my parents when they age, but of course I realise not every family, or every old person/couple would like such a set up. Let us know how you get on when you speak to them and we'll try to find something!!0

The obvious location that springs to mind would be Salford Quays. Lots of new apartments have gone up, various range of prices, majority with car parking. Good Metrolink (tram) access to Manchester City Centre and further afield. Plenty of facilities in walking distance on the door step, including small supermarket, Lowry Outlet Mall Shopping Centre, Cinema, Lowry Thearter, Imperial War Museum North... plenty of cafes, bars and resturants.
Second suggestion would be Swinton (in Salford). Plenty of new apartments being built/built, varying range of prices. Good bus access to City Centre and further afield. Train Station. Reasonable sized town centre with various facilities including a Matalan, Morrisons, Aldi, Coop, Netto, Farm Foods etc and the majority of banks. Also plenty of pubs, resturants and Cafes as Swinton is the location of Salford Town Hall (all those council workers need a Latte at lunch time).0 -
Planner - thanks and yes they seem to like their Costa type of coffee still!A retired senior partner, in own agency, with 40 years experience in property sales & new build. In latter part of career specialising in commercial - mostly business sales.0
