What's the deal?
'Freeview+' set top box maker Humax is offering piles of stock cheap in the 'manager's specials' corner of its website, starting at £89. While the savings aren't truly earth-shattering, it's well worth a look if you're in the market for one of these boxes.
The stock isn't brand new; it's listed as 'grade A'. This generally means it's been returned and, where necessary, repaired to brand new standard. All boxes come with a full year's guarantee.

What's Freeview+?
It's a shorthand for Freeview boxes which also record TV onto in-built hard drives, effectively VCRs for the digital age. Humax also makes Freesat HD boxes, which, as the name suggests, can be hooked up to a satellite dish to receive free-to-air satellite channels. Freesat Website.

I am having trouble finding FreeSat PVRs or FreeSat + . Can anybody help out or point me in the right direction to find a Freesat receiver with a large hard drive ? I assume more memory is needed for the higher definition,
Thanks0 -

If you do not need HD than the size of the hard drive is purely about recording space/time you need.ac's lovechild0 -

At the moment (AFAIK) the only PVR with built-in FreeSat tuner is the Humax FoxSat (http://www.humaxdirect.co.uk/product.asp?ProdRef=10073&cat=stb). Otherwise you will need a separate FreeSat tuner with any other PVR. HD does use more space, it depends how much you think you will want to record and keep. You always have the option of recording an HD channel in normal definition. Also unless you have a TV with built-in FreeSat tuner (Panasonic Viera is one) you will need a second tuner to watch one channel and record another channel. Hope this helps.0 -
humax foxsat pvr is the only one available at present. Panasonic are bringing out one with a bigger hard drive and bluray recorder in May, but it'll set you back nearly £1k, so the Humax is probably your best bet. This site gives you details of who has them in stock at the mo and at what price:

Does anyone know of a hard disk recorder that can record from an external source such as cable box, sky box, etc?
I'd like to be able to record programs from my Virgin box without paying the extra monthly subscription to V+.
The only solution I can see is to build (or buy) a media centre pc but I don't particularly want to have one whirring away by my TV.0 -
Does anyone know of a recorder that will allow you to view subtitles on playback? It's a bug bear of mine as I have a hearing disability and it's really annoying now trying to watch tv without subtitles (even in a cinema). Last time I enquired they couldn't tell me that it would display subtitles so I didn't bother..."I am indelibly stained by hope and longing" - Nuts in May0

The Humax models will allow you to do this as they record subtitles in the programme.:D0
