we have been with n power for about 6 months, and we pay a set amount on the 10th to reach them by the 15th. every month they say we are in arrears and now they say we cannot pay monthly anymore. so we want to switch. we don't want to pay direct debit but just a monthly payment

The typical way to pay monthly is by a variable direct debit. This is so the supplier can vary the amount taken from you (after giving you the correct advance notice) dependant on your consumption.
If you don't allow them to vary the amount collected (i.e. by not paying by DD) then you will probably fall into arrears again.
Alternatively you can pay what you actually owe on receipt of bill. Some suppliers may allow you to pay monthly and show these as a credit on your bill, but any balance owed at the billing date will be required to be paid.
Why not open a savings account, pay what you want every month into that and use those savings to pay the bill when it arrives. Better the money earns interest in your account than in the suppliers. At todays interest rates, it won't be worth much, but every penny helps."Now to trolling as a concept. .... I don't understand. You say you're not 'actually in arrears' but then you say 'they say we can't pay monthly any more'.
Why can't you pay monthly? Normally, suppliers increase the monthly payment if it's insufficient.0
