Durability of My Laptop Screen

I've had my IBM thinkpad r50e laptop for about 3 months now and already notice that the chassis is starting to creak quite a bit when I open and close the display. This is probably the result of the weakening of the plastic housing at certain stress points.
For this reason, to reduce wear and tear, I've been leaving the laptop open most of the time when it's at home. I only open and close it occasionally or when I travel.
Does anyone else do this? Are the new laptops pretty durable. Am I being too anal about this

You do get the odd creaking noises, especially if it's too hot or too cold, I believe it is metal hinges underneath the plastic on IBM laptops so I shouldn't imagine it will be an issue for you.Treat others as you would like to be treated :A0

The creaking noise comes from the top of the screen from where I open and close my notebook (laptop).
I used to open/close from the left side of the top of the screen but now I use the middle to balance out any pressure on the chasis and as a result it does not creak as much, in this way
I'm fairly sure its not the metal hinges  unless they have hinges underneath the plastic in the screen at the top?!0
