switching when moving?

Sorry if this is a really silly question. I'm currently buying a property and am looking for the cheapest supplier, however do I have to stick with whoever is currently supplying theses services to the property at the moment, take up an account with them and then switch afterwards, or can I just contact whoever I like and switch straight away?
