Tax exemption on relocation package running out

Is anyone in the same boat?
I moved job due to redundancy in Feb 08 and was offered a generous relocation expenses package. But apparently the HMRC rules only allow such expenses to be tax exempt up to the end of the tax year after the job change, i.e. Apr 5 this year for me.
Our house has been on the market for ages and is only now starting to get some interest in it, but we have realistically missed the boat to complete by Apr 5.
Has anyone successfully negotiated an extension to the deadline with the HMRC?
And with their employer?
