This must sound a silly question to many but do I HAVE to get my phone connection, and pay them, via BT? I make very few calls and receive broadband over their line. Can I change and who would be the best (cheapest)?

Hi Hadrian, I hope someone can give a positive answer to your question as I note on my BT bill just received that the service charge has been increased again. NOT HAPPY!0

No you don't. You could move your exchange line rental to Talk Talk or the Post Office, or others. But if you do you should note that you may not be able to route your outbound phone calls through another operator should you so wish. Only BT has to allow its customers to route their calls via oter operators should they wish to do so.
Also you need to check with your current broadband provider if moving will affect their service.0 -

You could, but the 50p saving on line rental would immediately be wiped away if you use caller display, plus 1571 on TalkTalk.
If you don't use caller display or 1571, then the savings you will make will be pennies. It's PAC not PAC Code, it's MAC not MAC Code, it's PIN not PIN Number, it's ATM not ATM Machine, it's LCD not LCD Display, it's DVD not DVD disc... It's no one not noone, It's a lot not alot, It's got not gotten... Panini is the plural of panino - there is no S!!(OK my English isn't great, the sciences, maths & IT are my strong points!)0
