Can anyone recommend a good (fairly reasonably priced) outdoor security light, ideally a lantern style?

NEWLEC range of PIR style light fittings are normally quite good. The ones higher up the range have a thermal compensation programme built in that prevents false triggers of the light.
NEWLEC products are avaliable only from the electrical wholesalers; Newey (formaly newey and eyre)
Please note, i do not work for Newey and other fine security lights are probabaly avaliable however i have used the afore mentioned before.0 -
We bought this for my parents a few months ago from B&Q, and it it a nice little light at a reasonable price. There are a few more styles on the page.

I quite like the ones that are on at a low level from dusk til dawn and get brighter as somebody approaches. If anybody has seen or can recommend a low energy version (not solar).0
