Best Place to Get Currency in the High Street?

I'm a bit wary of ATM's abroad as when I was in Vietnam I was planning on doing this except they wanted a 6 figure pin number typed in. So I couldnt get any money out and only had £200 for the whole 3 week holiday (which actually was plenty enough as everything is cheap there).
Are they only 4 figure pin numbers in Europe? Silly question I know, sorry.2008 Comping ChallengeWon so far - £3010 Needed - £230Debt free since Oct 20040 -

I have used ATMs in many, many countries abroad and never had a problem. I have even used them in Vietnam (only at the airport mind you) and never had a problem. 6 digit pin? Can't remember having such an issue.
In fact I've often been away with no local currency with me and relying on an ATM as soon as I got to the departures hall."An eye for an eye leaves the whole world blind" - Mahatma Gandhi0 -

Certain cash machines in Japan accept foreign issued cards, its just a matter of finding them!!
Also same is the case in Belgium. To make life more tricky in Belgium, ATMs are only open at certain times (i.e. not 24hours like in the UK)!"An eye for an eye leaves the whole world blind" - Mahatma Gandhi0 -
it is possible to get currency from M&S online (you need an M&S credit card or an &MORE card)
