Can banks authorise payments from expired cards?

Hi
I'm new to this forum but would like advice from anyone who has any idea whether banks are allowed to take money from your account with card details that have now expired.
The situation is that I purchased an antivirus product online and I obviously set it to renew automatically (although I'm not aware of ticking this box as I am very careful about looking for better deals upon expiry).
The money was taken from my Lloyds TSB account however it was using the previous debit card which expired over 6 months ago. The account number is obviously the same but the 16 digit number, cvc code, start date/expiry date are all different, yet the payment still went through.
Lloyds TSB told me that they are authorised to do this because it is a renewal.
So in the same vain, I guess a renewal payment can be taken even if it is with a card that expired number of years ago!? Surely this isn't right.
Any advice anyone?

This is usually called a continuous payment authority and these are very common. It works this way with all credit cards and with Visa debit cards as well. I have read that it can't be done with Maestro debit cards and that this is one of the reasons that some banks (HSBC already and RBS Group, inc NatWest later this year) are changing from Maestro to Visa, so that this sort of payment can be made.
It can be a useful method of payment, providing that you realise you agreeing to it. There can be a lot of problems with them though because they they are impossible to cancel without contacting the payee company direct.0
