Sainsbury's- Worry Free Protection Plan

Hi, received a call from Sainsbury's today to say my appliance had discontinued and manufacturer had reported some faults by customers and as my warranty had expired they suggested I take out their worry free protection plan. Not convinced I checked with the manufacturer and they said it hadn't and no faults had been reported. When I went back to Sainsburys they said it was a mistake and it was the product for the previous customer, I asked what that was and they gave me a model number of a product that had discontinued in a few years ago although in their conversation they sai the manufacturer had contacted them last week of this.
I am convinced Sainsburys are doing this to other customers as a way of getting them to take out new cover. Has anyone experienced this type of phone call or any advice how I take this further. I will contact the office of fair trading.

Thats disgraceful and certainly not what you would expect from Sainsburys, give watchdog a call or email as I reckon they will be very interested in it.

P.S Well done for being alert and spotting it
  • Just to update you, I have reported this to the OFT and Sainsburys have issued me with an apology and reassurance that it will be investigated.

Wouldn't it be "illegal "for Sainsburys to sell the warranty on a product aFTER faults had been discovered?Don't think the insurer would be too pleased if they knew?
