Old bank account possibly in red possibly in the black?

Hi Guys
I have a bit of a quandary. When I was in University (2001-2004) I had two bank accounts one graduate account with Barclays and a current account I had opened when I was a kid with HSBC. One day I went to get money out of my HSBC account at a hole in the wall and the machine eat my card with no warning and told me to contact my bank. As I was lazy at the best of times back then and as I thought I hardly had any money/no money in the account I decided to do nothing about it and I forgot about it. I have had no contact from HSBC bank since but I recently found the old cheque book for the account. I'm a bit afraid to contact them as I may have some money in there that is mine but I may have a whopping great overdraft waiting for me as well!
Does any one have any advice?

Go into the branch and ask a cashier for your balance. Take ID with you in case your signature has changed since the account has opened.0
