toilet cistern slow to fill........

Hi,
sorry in advance if this is a daft question -- my toilet cistern is very slow to fill - not a huge problem except when i have visitors then its a bit embarrassing as it takes ages til it can flush again.
The water comes from a tank in the loft. Toilet at least 20 years old.
Is there anything i can do to improve speed of filling up cistern ?
is it down to the water pressure from the tank or old type of fittings/pipes in the cistern.......
Thanks Anne

if you can get the top of cistern off, have a look a /adjust screw on the arm that holds the float.
also, is here anything blocking water flow?Long time away from MSE, been dealing real life stuff..
Sometimes seen lurking on the compers forum :-)0 -
Ballc ock not dropping fully?
Again, you will need to take the top off the cistern.0 -
If the cistern has always been slow in filling, then it is likely that it was supplied originally for high pressure water , and not for low pressure. There is an insert in the float valve normally which restricts the high pressure. If yours has this, then it is restricting the low pressure and producing a slow fill. After all these years it would be a good idea to install a new low pressure Torbeck type valve. They are only £10 from Screwfix or Toolstation and simple enough to install. I would think that this would cure your problem. Alternatively, have look at the existing valve. If you take it to pieces you might well find the pressure reducer inside it. It looks like a long piece of plastic with a spiral thread around the outside. If it were my problem, I would just change the valve for a new low pressure one.I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.0 -
Hi Guys,
thanks for replying - I've had a look inside everything seems to be as it should be & functioning just slow.
