Now, traditionally its ash for copicing for firewood, but what else is good? We want a lot of hazel, but could stand some variety! Hardwoods are important because we think we definitly will try a wood boiler as the first defence against the cold..not a pellet one. Also, as we will three/five open fires not burners, we want stuff that doesn't spit too much!

Hi Lir, there's a couple of poems here that tell you what's best.

We had beech hedges in the house I lived in from 13-21. Mum always moaned they were untidy over the winter as they seemed to hang onto the leaves when they were over and dry. I rather liked it, and I'm sure the birds preferred the cover the leaves gave!

Alfie, if you've had such a great effect on a horse within a year or so, just think of the potential for the man in your life.

I love those. and of course ash is best. I quite fancy buying those cheap fruit trees that the cheap supermarkets do and leaving them for wood too, but they take an age to grow and need fencing off from animals.

    hi all....
if you are like me..sat indoors all cosy with chocolate.....and not out at a rave [how did i do that !!:D ] then im here to confirm its down to AGE...:rotfl:

anyway, oh boy did we just have a storm ! its been really sunny all day and then a big black umbrella descended ...lightening,thunder and rain and rain.... then it disapeared as fast as it arrived ???

ive chopped down all my hollyhocks today, i have literally 100s of young ones springing up everywhere, the wind has spred em all over. i love it !:) will hav all sorts pinging up next year, im one of those that just chucks seeds everywhere and see what grows where !
i have a long tall old brick wall with iron railings on top all round the front of the property. approx 100ft each side of gates. i am going to clear an 18" width all the way along and put all sorts of seeds in so its a mass of color next year. i found 2 sacks of daff bulbs in the shed [forgot to plant them] do you think they will be ok?? :o

well, got one of the barns done, and four of those trees chopped and stacked (him chopping!). And the sun flowers pulled out.

I'm getting panicky about the freezer, I haven't managed to get any apples into it yet, and I find those so usefull ALL year round. I might dedicate a few hours to it this week.

i do miss having a freezer in one way, fruit etc as you say are usefull all year but i cant keep the temperature right when generator is off ! but it does make for eating fresh food albeit shopping more regularly...my fridge is ok cos i have it on a high setting and it just keeps cool enough. :)

i "did" a carboot sale this morning ! a bit rash getting up at 6.30 am.... it was raining but as i was now stumbling round in my dressing gown and my furry slippers i thought i would just sit with a cuppa instead. then at 9am the sun came out so having fed animogs ridiculously early [mabel was most put out but decided to emerge rather then let the resident co*k pheasant eat her food..] i decided to go. i literally slung some old furniture in the trailer [covered in hay and debris :D] chucked a few bits in the van and set off. and sold nearly everything !!:rotfl: i conclude that less stalls and same amount of people = more sales !!:D

There's no room in ours, cos it's full of plums & damsons! The apples are neatly stacked in boxes, but we'll have to remember to look through those once a week.

We've had the first sheep get its head stuck through the fencing today. Not a good start! :(

It has blown non-stop here and everything's just soggy.:( I have re-potted all the trees I've done, from tiddly and not-so-tiddly saplings, including our best filbert, Cosford Cob. One even produced six nuts, although it was only in a pot! By comparison, Elms take ages, putting on almost zero growth in the first year.

It's sad, but I'm also doing away with much of the spare nursery stock. sad-smiley-001.gif It's all stuff I can re-grow very easily anyway. I'm recycling the compost too, so much of it will end up inside the new polytunnel.

Speaking of the polytunnel, we'll be growing more in there, so there will be less demand on outside space, leaving us with an large area which was to be nursery stock and now is ????? At present, we're thinking grass + geese as a low maintenance option. :)

Nah, geeses every time. :D Accoding to Pete, they are no bother....
....but then he told me his ram was 'gentle' when he brought him here last winter!

What's the saying? "They told me I was gullible, and I believed them!" :rotfl:
