So what are you going to do with it? Fish of some sort? Omg, it's my dream to have my own lake.
In other news, the birds in my garden and me, have for years had an understanding, I grow stuff, they eat some of it and leave some of it for me, that way, I don't get too annoyed and they get some free food.
This has now come to an endblackbirds have stripped my redcurrants in one day, last year the jostaberries I could live without, but this is going too far. For six years, I've had some redcurrants and they've had some, but I've always had enough.
Now I'm annoyed and some redesign is going to happen. I think I may have had it easy up to nowFreedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes.0 -

Its got a rather prosaic history LE. Before you get too envious
1. its only JUST big enough...the boat can go round and round on a circle not much larger than its own axis
2. this was a dairy farm...I'm sure you'll know, when you think about it why a dairy farm might have a big hole capable of being a pond. Once all the !!!!!! is cleared from them. Thankfully, that's been done. But remembering its original purpose is enough to keep one's feet on the ground :rotfl:
3. in our ideal world we'd do something like a biotop swimming pond. But there is no way we can afford it. we're trying to work out if we could do a diy version more diy than biotop's diy version. The price of which would make you weep. As it is we'll probably vaseline over cuts and shower afterwards for a while, but getting it clear would be MUCH nicer!
edit: I had a dig about and found a pic for you from before we moved in....its VERY flattering as to condition ;)edit again, oh and that big oak is a long way a way, scale makes it look like the pond is huge....its not right next to the end of the pond.
edit removed link!

Bearing in mind the pond's history, it would be fitting to now fill it with carp.
Sorry the extra money isn't coming your way Winged-one, but at least you can enjoy your improved work/life balance this summer and do more of what you fancy. Like house hunting, there might be something even better around the corner.
I'm surprised you think water restrictions will be enforced later, as I'd imagined you'd had plenty of rain over there. The last few days are the only ones when we've not watered since..... I can't remember when!
We have two orange tomatoes and picked the first of the Bijou peas yesterday, but they weren't 7" long, as advertised. At last, the Swiss chard and other greens have overtaken the hens' demand for them, as they do love their greens!
After the mystery death last week, we have another hen unwell, but she's been going downhill for a while and always was the lowest of the ones we obtained last year. She's been suspected of not laying for quite a while. We've had her in the small house & run for a few days and done much one-to-one feeding, but there's no improvement. This means our slightly lame hen, which is still withdrawing from medication, has had to move into a specially adapted old ferret day cage with added run...at least until she lays an egg, when she can then safely join the others for the rest of the day. She's fine, and quite a feisty little thing.
I have spent half the day down polytunnel foundation holes, finishing them, so now we're ready to set the rest of the tubes for one side. It's been a bit of a struggle, with bedrock in most holes, but if the weather's changing, I need to get them done in case the spring starts up again!
Famous last words.....the other side will be relatively easy...;)0 -
All this talk of cucumbers and courgettes being ready, I'm still 2-3 weeks away and my toms are very green
But the goosegogs are ready for jam making (and eating) the new potatoes are lovely and the peas have been left a bit too long but are still nice.
Off to an auction this morning for fun, will make a change from Ebay and I want to sell some specialist stuff later this year so it pays to check out the ropes.
Lir, if you put a pike or two in the pond, could you charge for native fish pedicures?
Lotus Eater, nets notwithstanding, the blackbirds are well ahead on points
Wet and windy here, glad I'm inside today.0 -

shudder.
I used to swim in a french swimming pond, man made for swimming. On the same site there was a second pond not for human swimming, but for fishing and for dogs to swim in. But it looked nicer, wilder and more fun. (it had an island in the middle and was HUGE). As I was about 1/2 way to the island I started being bitten, (my mother recons it was snakes, I think fish) and I swam as ast as I could to the island. It took me a good 30-5 mins to build up courage to swim back.:o:o
I don't mind a bit of dock poop, I like for example the Hampstead ponds, but clear water with naturalistic terraced garden and flowers would be nicer still.0 -
Dry today after torrential rain yesterday - again.
Had a cull of cockerels & also dear ole Mrs Hopperty who was ancient rescue hen from a breeder & had been run over! Her limping got so bad that she was starting to be in obvious pain, so felt it was a kindness. I've had her at least 7 years I think.
Treated the rest of Scot's Greys for scaly leg as I seem to have brought that in - well it's appeared here. I have one hen who I thought was about to peg out on me a while back but she's still here. I've wormed her & she seems perky, but not really great.
If I take her to the vets it'll cost me £25 plus & to be honest & possibly callous sounding I'm not prepared to.
Any thoughts welcome.0 -
Choille, lots of scaly leg at our local market according to DW, but as regards the under-the-weather hen, we have a similar problem. Like you, we won't go to the vet, but just isolate her and put her on a special diet, including honey & water. If she continues to go downhill, it will be euthanasia, home-style, at the weekend.0

Oh Poor Mrs Hopperty. She's been such a part of this thread! Kindness is hard. But well done.
Be interestd to hear how you both fare with the scaly leg over time.0 -
OH was all for putting her light out this morning but I sort of thought we'd give her a bit more time.
I've got someone laying a verythin shelled egg - wonder if it's her - usually broken in the nest box.
Goodness - hard sometimes figuring out what to do, what's wrong with them.0
