Sounds like you've been having fun Dave
The cucumber frame is actaully the base from my old sofaIt's a Wautoma from real seeds too! The first time I've successfully grown a cucumber so I'll definately try them again.

Chickens are in great form! Moved them on to one of the veg beds and they love it. The blacktail laid another monster egg yesterday, this time without hurting itself.
Got DW's website started, but still have to add shopping cart, payment and stock. In another few weeks.......? Printed business cards, price tags yesterday and will be doing sales notices today as DW has her first craft fair tomorrow. Bit nervous how it will go but you have to start somewhere.
Davesnave, dont be like Boxer in animal farm, "I will work harder" !!. Mind you, it sounds like the pig went first
Jayne, love the photos, looks like you're using every inch of your garden0 -

Whoo, you're one to talk! Sounds like you are well ahead of me with your web site. I am very impressed. :A
As it happens, the rain put paid to my exertions, filling the holes I'd dug with water, so it looks there might be no polytunnel this year. Even if I can get the remaining four holes done in a dry spell, it's looking tight for putting the cover on, which has to be during warm, still conditions. I have side rails & stuff to do, plus daughter going off to uni shortly, with all the extra hassle that involves, so the unthinkable may happen.....:(
On a brighter note, our chickens are all mixed together now, the big chicken shed is roofed and, after a lot of head-scratching, I worked out how to do ventilating shutters without letting the rain in. Now all we need is some wood for the perches and nest boxes.
As for aches & pains, I'm finding unfiltered cider vinegar & honey every day, as recommended by our old neighbour who keeps horses, is doing wonders.
Must go. Car has MoT.........No, it won't pass! :rotfl:0 -

Please let us know when the website goes live - I need prezzies for the (grown up and left home) kids - some now parents themselves, but still expect a Christmas Stocking! ;-)
Hate to nag, but some folks are Xmas shopping already, so might be good to get the website sorted ASAP to catch them. But having said that there'll always be late folks like me who leave it late to buy!
Best of luck with it all. :beer:0 -
Will do ukmaggie, just got to figure out Zencart and mysql databases. Hopefully paypal will be easy!
Left DW at craft fair, not many people turning up
Hope she's not too disheartened
OTOH, she doesnt know yet that her second knee op has just been scheduled, so that might cheer her up0 -
Nothing to report here, beans, lettuce, courgettes etc have been good, tomatoes seem to be getting blight on some plants, potatoes which were delicious are almost finished....not going with just earlies next year, although OH doesn't know that yet!
Have had a very painful frozen shoulder for past 2 weeks, easing off now, but it has meant that very little real work has been done.
No money to go to fund for weeks now, hopefully it will start trickling in soon again.
Keep up the good work.

Garden has been doing OK here, some things better than last year and some not so good. Didn't get anything like as many beans with all the dry weather we had; on the other hand did manage my first ever sweetcorn and it was really tasty! I did sow seeds for later crops (carrots and oriental radish) but have about 3 of one and 5 of the other from a whole row, the slugs got them, Grrrrrrrr. Expensive slug food. This evening I popped out to the shed and almost stepped on two monsters, so I went back for a torch and a plastic bag (to use as an improvised glove) and took a stroll down the garden with a bucket to see if there were more I could pick up and dispose of. I found 82 of them :eek: almost all were those big orangey-brown ones, a couple were in flagrante as well - no more of that thank you, I poured boiling water in the bucket and will tip them out in the morning for the birds and hedgehogs!0

I seem to have loads of slugs this year too. Also alsorts of mould on the fruit - it's been that sort of weather for it - I think.
I've made some jam & we have had a fair bit of salads. The carrots have fly. The tatties seem to have scab. I didn't put any cabbages in & I haven't done as much as usual this year. It has been the worst midgy year we have had. It's been so bad because the dull, still weather, it's been impossible to be outside almost.
None of the hens have raised a brood so no chicks this year. Am considering buying an incubator - or possibly a broody, a silkie.
Have had to give up my plans for a woodland as there have been objections. We have a 'neighbour' problem & that's been pretty sickening for us.
Tomorrow I'm off to Oban for the Crofting Federation annual gathering so that is something to look forward to.0 -
Good afternoon all, I'm new here and am totally hooked on CTC's thread, I hope I can join in the chat soon when I've caught up, I feel as though I know many of you so well now already!
I'm on page 13 atm (May 2009). I hope all who are posting at this time are still posting now (although can you slow down a bit as I have another 57 pages to read before I catch up! lol).
Just a bit of a recap, Davesnave has just had an offer accepted on a smallholding in Devon, I really hope it went through for you Dave, I can hardly wait to find out but I'm not going to cheat and read the last page!
CTC, is growing stuff and thinking about selling a couple of trikes, last figure she had in her Daydream fund was £2001.45 but I see her sig says £1005 so guessing she's bought some stuff!
Stitchwitch's hubby has just had his op and is recovering. I was sending out positive thoughts in the hope that they would transcend the depths of time and will have helped. Hope he's made a full recovery and I hope you've found a derelict cottage to rent/do up for yourselves.
MrsM has more tomatoes than Heinz and Daddies put together!
Rummer, hope your debt is almost gone now. Sorry can't remember all the other names but I'm loving all your posts!
Hope you don't mind me joining you. My daydream is to get my garden to be productive and start paying for itself! With the help of a friend I am making it happen!
Anyway, I just looked at one of the links Davesnave posted (a place he had been interested in before his offer was accepted) and it to look for some places round by me. There was anything local so I checked a bit further afield and found this:
http://www.uklanddirectory.org.uk/land-for-sale.asp?id=11265
17.5 acres of woodland (Sherwood Forest) for £130k! There is something magical about woods isn't there?
Anyway, sorry to interrupt, I'm heading back to May 09 and page 13 to carry on reading and hope to catch up with you all soon!

Early morning all, have read some more and am up to page 37. I've done a few bits n bobs between reads, so catching up slowly but surely. Back at work tomorrow so will try and do a few pages tomorrow night.
So far, Davesnave is settling into his new smallholding, he's on station run as his DW went Strictly watching. Congrats Dave!
Choile has just lost her little hand reared lamb, aw I nearly cried at that bit.
Rummer is needs to find a way of supressing the weeds in his beds because his winter crops got ate.
CTC is having meetings about a Ssupermarket being built on her doorstep and is selling vintage clothes on Ebay. Yay keep it up, I'm rooting for you!
Stiching Witch and Mrs Mc haven't posted for a while.
Lotus Eater got post 666 which was apt for asking about a churchy relic question.
It's early November and you've mentioned the coming winter, I'm like, Choile get out of the caravan! It's going to be really bad!!!
Thanks all for entertaining me, I'm learning loads, permiculture, chicken breeds, lack of mobile abbatoires in th Highlands, crofting... I can't wait to get home from work tomorrow night!
See you all tomorrow!
Good night all
