Hiring a steam carpet cleaner

My friend is moving into a neglected house soon. Some of the carpets look decent, but they're filthy.
Is it possible to hire one of those steam cleaners they use on programmes like "how clean is your home?" to see if any of the carpets can be salvaged?
Or is it a job for the professionals?
She doesn't think a wet system like Rug Doctor would cope with the filth.

Here I go again on my own....

I've used Rug Doctors and also hired someone in to do various carpets/houses. The man in a van operations have always cleaned 10x better than the DIY machines and don't cost much more than the hire/chemicals in the DIY option.Signature on holiday for two weeks0
