Labour "hugely proud of the progress"

  • The one thing that Labour can take credit for is the Northern Ireland Peace Process.

Sadly, it looks as if that is failing, but Tony Blair did see to do well with that.

Don't give up on it yet - a few thousand dissidents does not make for a return to full hostilities.

You also need to recognise the enormous lengths that John Major went to driving the initial stages of the pricess forward. He forged contacts with the IRA and continued dialogue with them even when after bombs in Docklands and Manchester it would have been politically expedient to abandon them. All that Blair and his team did was built on foundations laid by Major.

I agree, the NI peace process is one development that both governments deserve credit for. One of my relatives ended up on life support during the troubles and that is something we absolutely do not want to return to. I found it hugely heartening seeing the republican community laying flowers at the weekend and honestly believe that those times will not return.

re Northern Ireland, I think among some pople there was an expectation that there would be some scale of revolt among a new generation of dissidents.

It seems to me that almost everyone wants to hate someone...:(

Sterling / US Dollar exchange rate 1/5/97 $1.63
Sterling / US Dollar Exchange Rate today $1.42 - a 13% devaluation during Labour's time in office.

    Looking back at other governments:

    Tories 79 - 97
Sterling / US Dollar exchange rate 1/5/79 $2.06
    Sterling / US Dollar Exchange Rate 1/5/97 $1.63 - a 21% devaluation

    That means absolutely nothing.

You are comparing 2 meaningless points in time to make your point. This is what averages are good for. You've even used a smaller amount of time against a longer amount of time.

I can do exactly what you have just done, with two different points in time which makes labour look like a bunch of monkeys and the tories squeaky clean.

let me get this right Graham and this isn't disagreeing with what you have said - you're saying the Conservatives would be much better than Labour

below is a statement by George Osbourne from the weekend - he is not wrong with what he is saying but he provides no solution, no alternative or even telling us what the best option to take. They are just soundbites.

Both parties are as bad each other and we would be in the same type of problems regardless who was in power.

"George said, "It is shocking that the Government has not been prepared to subject either of these huge decisions to proper Parliamentary scrutiny."
And he added, "For the size of the British economy we have now spent more than any other country on bailing out our banks and there’s precious little to show for it. The taxpayer deserves better."

Where did I say anything about the bit your telling me I'm saying?

I didn't. I was only talking about how the figures were "used" and "massaged".

So how I was saying or suggesting, what YOU are suggesting I was suggesting, I don't know, and am a little confused as to how you are suggesting I was suggesting :D

Contrary to what many would expect, manufacturing output grew under the conservative administration, and has actually declined under the current Labour regime.

That's a sad indictment on a Labour government.

JasonLVC said "Brown has devalued the pound like no other leader". I have show that he has not - Brown has run our economy for the last 12 years and it is untrue to say he has devalued most as can be seen above in the facts. And lets not forget that during that period you could also argue factually that "Brown has inflated the pound like no other leader" - the exchange rate went $1.40 in June 2001 to a peak of $2.07 in November 2007. And then back again.

Interestingly the period where the dollar crashed against most major currencies ties in pretty well with Bush's time in office and his vast programme of borrowing to fund tax cuts for the fabulously wealthy. Funny that.
