I have seen these in Argos and was thinking of buying one but how easy are they to install?

How do you connect it to your drain pipe, do you have to drill a hole in it?

I believe with this type you have to cut your existing downpipe completely and put the diverter in between the joint.
Just need a hacksaw and ensure you cut at the correct height. This is best done after siting the butt first.

Update - a sample installation guide can be found here

    Thanks for the info.

If I bought one I would probably end up putting it at the end of the garden and make sure it is topped up with tap water instead, just to save me carrying watering cans. We haven't got an outdoor tap and I have to carry water from the kitchen and top up quite often.

I suppose you can just detach the black pipe at the top of the barrel.

Yes the black pipe is detachable and most kits normally have a blanking plug if the hole is pre-drilled. If you have a shed in your garden maybe you could site it there to catch water from the shed roof.

Yep, that's where I was going to put it, under the shed in the corner of the garden.

I don't know if it is a good price or not but it is reduced at the moment at Argos for £19.59.

Not sure if you get all the kit with the argos one? but i don't think you do with the wilko one, ie stand

Edit just looked and it does so that's a good buy

That doesn't include the stand, that is an additional £9.99 and I think the Argos one looks slimmer, in fact it is only 100ltrs, the other one is 120ltrs.

Well I collected mine today and luckily it isn't as bright as the one in the picture that Argos has online.

Argos are a bit funny for that actually, displaying pictures that aren't exactly the same as the item that you pick up.

Anyway, it is exactly the same but a very dark green colour which is a lot better as it blends in with the privet hedge.

I didn't need to plug any holes in it (as I am not connecting it to the drain pipe but putting it down by the shed) as you have to drill the hole yourself to fit the drainage pipe into.

It does say that it is 100ltrs but I have filled it with 5 buckets of water to see how high the water level came to and check for leaks and it is nowhere near half full. I either have a small bucket or it is more like 120ltrs!

    ;)

I have a water butt to install but the drain pipe for the house has a feed from the sink and bath in the toilet - which is no good. Also its a metal pipe which i guess would make it more difficult.

The other option is the plastic drain pipe from the garage - will that give enough water?

I only also have the container but no lid or stand. I can make a stand with bricks but would be good to have a proper lid - does anyone know where I can buy the lid separately?
Proud to be a moneysaver!
