I'm in favour of it. Most jobs these days are minimum wage and while you can keep a roof over your head on that, there's nothing left over for "life".

Hardly a sensitively timed announcement, is it? Private sector workers being laid off, no payrises or paycuts for those not made redundant.

Timely announcement considernng elections are near. Guess who pays for the rise in council tax that will follow? how about balancing it iwth reduced pay for the fat cats in the council.

The problem comes when you're faced with not working with a minimum wage of £7/hr or possibly working for a fiver/hr.

All depends how much it will cost. I don't think £7 per hour is overly high.

My 19 year old son earns under £2.00 an hour at the moment, but he is on an apprentiship which are not covered by minimum wage rules. I think his money will go up sometime this year.

Add in 20% pension contribution and 10% NI and holiday/sickness cover (another 10%+) that means the most basic job is costing council more than £22,000pa.

What are pensioners expected to live on today - about a quarter of that ?

No wonder council taxes are going up and services down!

    Wage inflaiton here we come?

It's wholly unethical to have a council minimum wage, where someone photocopying gets £7 per hour, yet down the road, someone with qualifications in a nursing home gets near the national minimum wage.

I don't think those in the council currently on £7 per hour for doing a "higher up job" would be too happy either. I know I wouldnt if that happened where I work. Unless of course, all those "higher up" also get a payrise to keep them all on the same levels? Which would be unfair on the rest of us.

Well done Gordon... I am going to challenge my employer to double my wages and half my working hours.

The minimum wage needs to be higher and i dont agree with the lower amounts for younger ages either.

Why should someone working full time be no better off than someone whos been claiming benefits whos got no intention of looking for work. (long term unemployed not the genuine cases!)
