I've probably blown chance of redundancy payment

I worked for a small family firm for over 20 years. In January 2008 my boss told us on the Monday he was closing the business and we were all finishing on the Friday. We got that week's wage but no other payment. He was a wreck mentally with the stress of it all.He told me that once the premises was sold then I'd get any redundancy due to me.I spoke to him after another employee had sent a solicitor's letter asking for all redundancy and monies due to him and my ex-boss was very upset.I, out of (misplaced?)loyalty, did not ask for anything but took it on trust that I'd be paid what's due to me.The firm went into liquidation in November 2008.The company handling the insolvency sent a form to me to apply for redundancy, holiday pay, etc. They have told me that as I did not send a letter to my ex-boss asking for redundancy before six months from the date I last worked for him then I am not entitled to any redundancy payment.Loyalty comes at an expensive price!
