How high can a fence be?

Hi,

How high can I build a fence?

I will be building it on my side of the boundry, ontop of an existing wall that straddles the boundry, so how high can I go?

Just so it is not that simple to answer, my neighbours side is about 30-40 cm higher, due to raised decking they have had installed.

At the moment the wall stands about 3 foot high, above the decking, and is used to access a converted garage(which is now a disabled living area/bedroom) so is used lots during the day. All I wish to do is regain the privousy of my back garden.

thanks for reading

Lee.

Basicly 6 foot / 2 meters unless on front then 3 foot/1 meter

Talk to them before doing anything.

I believe that fences on the sides and rear of a property can go up to 2m.
    The front limit is 1m.

These of course can be subject to local restrictions, or covenants on the property etc (I'm not allowed to have a front wall due to a covenant on mine:confused:).

I think in the back garden it is 6ft - or certainly used to be

The only planning restrictions relate to fences/boundaries that adjoin a public highway or footpath or a listed property/one in a conservation area

Our house has a covenant that says 6ft at the back and none at the front beyond the front building line.

thanks for the replies everyone! I thought it was about 6ft/2m!

I think I will take a trip down to the town hall to get advice, but if any one knows will it be 6ft from my ground level or theirs?
Would I be right in thinking the higher of the 2?

I would have thought it was six foot from the bottom of the wall. however on my estate where people have put in decking next to fairly new fences , people have just put those fancy fence tops on them to make up for the raise in height.

the fancy fence bit you can put on the top of fences is a grey area.
its really called a trellis and therefore doesnt count as a fence.
if you need extra height then plant a hedge or climbers. there are no restrictions on hedges/plants.
    Get some gorm.
