Elec Bill - Where do i stand?

Options
i'm a customer of scottish hydro. Apparently I have two meters in my house, but for some reason, they have only been charging me for one meter. I rang the other day to check my account & they said i owed them £500 for 16 mths on the other meter.

This is desptite me submitting both meter readings electronically & over the phone. my meter is also read by accuread every 3 months. Over the past 6 months i have contacted them to make sure my bill is correct & they never mentioned anything about my account being pended & not finalised. I have been paying my bill £50 per month by direct debit.

Where do i stand. £500 is a lot of money & i'm worried sick about it. It is fair, as i've done everything i can to make sure i'm uptodate with my bills.

I think they have to give you the 16 months it's taken to build the debt, to repay it. They may reduce the outstanding amount, as a goodwill gesture, but don't have to.

If this is incorrect, someone will be along soon to contradict me!

Apart from obviously looking at the bills they sent you and realising it was only for one of your two meters you have.

    Is it fair........Yes
Ask for terms to repay it over a sensible time period.
You know you have only been paying for one meter and should have realised that if the other meter was running this also has to be paid for.
Depts and responsibilities do catch up with you. Do what is fair and talk it through with your provider.
  • I did read every bill & both meter readings are listed on the bills. But for some reason i was never charged for it. Haven't had a bill since May 2008.

If you realised they had not charged for it why did you not phone them and ask why.
Did you hope they would forget about it ?

Give them a call and sort it out.

I think OP has contacted them to discuss the account. What s/he hasn't done is put aside the funds to settle the bill for electricity used, even though s/he was aware it hadn't been charged.

In that case I wonder what the provider had said about a payment plan to repay the outstanding balance.
  • if i never had a bill for 9 months how did i know I wasn't beeing charged correctly. I was paying £40 a mth in Dec 2007. I rang them in Summer & up it up to £50 a month. I asked them electronically & over the phone for a bill on several occasions. Have the emails & call logs from my bt account to show this.

When hydro rang me the other week, they said they would send me a bill. Not rec'd one thru the post or via my email address. What more could i do. I wasn't aware that i wasn't been charged correctly. Lets not forget that they are at fault, as i rang them a few times to check my account & to request a bill.
