Duvet advice please.(i'm a bloke and useless at these things )

I'm after a new duvet but dont know anything about them.
At the moment i have a synthetic filling. Which are the best sort to get, and whats the advantages/ disadvantages. I dont mind paying a bit, but nothing ott. The duvet covet cover will be white.
One final thing, the pillows i have are filled with feathers, but i have about 5 pillow cases on then as i hate it when the feathers start coming out and going everywhere. You cant do this with duvets, so this needs to be taken into consideration.

thanks
Paul.

So to solve the problem with the feathers you want another synthetic duvet. What duvet depends on how warm you keep your house or like to sleep. Duvets come in tog ratings from 1 - 14 (1 coolest 14 warmest) a 7.5 tog is a year round duvet (ie, theoretically you wont be too warm in summer nor too cold in winter) but for a proper nights sleep I find having 2 duvets each designed for the appropriate season to be more comfortable (I have a 4 tog for summer and a 12 tog for winter). Make sure you buy the right size for your duvet cover too (Single, Double, King or Super King?)

So to summarise (or in blokese if you like ;)) go for any King size duvet with a synthetic filling and a tog of more than 7 and you cant go far wrong. :rotfl:

  • Yes, Safesound is right about getting a synthetic fibre one - since they're less expensive than feathers or down you could treat yourself to some synthetic pillows, too! With regard to the tog value - if you're happy with the warmth of the one you have already, check its tog value on the label and buy a new one of same value. Or higher/lower if current duvet not warm enough/too warm. Sweet dreams ...

Its a double bed. 135cm. The tog of the one i have is 13.5. I usually put a couple of sheets on top in the winter and sleep on top of the duvet in summer.

i have a 'nimbus' feather down duvet from debenhams, is lovely to sleep under and has a special tightly woven thread cover to stop the feathers coming out, and it works. its goose down by the way. id recommend it.

Just to complicate your duvet shopping further... avoid duvets that have the quilting across the way, and go for ones which have it lengthways.
I've found that they twist inside the duvet cover and you end up sleeping under something resembling a python that's swallowed a cow.

And some come in strange non-standard sizes!

    Good Luck!!

I made the mistake of buying a value duvet last time - it's a good duvet, keeps me warm when I want etc, but the filling is stiff and the covering is slippy and I'm forever loosing the duvet in the cover (slipping down, twisting round etc).

I had a lovely Fogarty all-seasons duvet a while back - comprised a 4.5 and a 10.5 that snapped together - was pricey but you could definitely tell the difference when you snuggled into it - soft and cosy. Slumberland and Dorma have been good in the past too.

Someone like Dunelm Mills will have lots of duvets on display so you can see what they feel like.

Get an all seasons one then. This is basically 2 quilts, one a summer weight and one a spring/autumn weight. Clip them together for those cold winter nights.
